SpinVox examines dossier claims

,----[ Quote ]

Patentability and Democracy in Europe

,----[ Quote ]
| In July 2005, after several failed attempts to legalise software patents in
| Europe, the patent establishment changed its strategy. Instead of explicitely
| seeking to sanction the patentabilitty of software, they are now seeking to
| create a central European patent court, which would establish and enforce
| patentability rules in their favor, without any possibility of correction by
| competing courts or democratically elected legislators.

This story is actually quite funny. It was more than "financial
irregularities. It is alleged that they faked ASR (automatic speech
recognition) results by having the voice transmissions relayed to call
centres outside of Europe and being transcribed there by humans and then
sent back as the results of their software.

As for the patents, assuming they are using stochastic methods (HMM's and
the like) these areas have been patented to death. Having worked in the
field (ASR) and still doint it to some extent, I doubt very much they'll
have a usable system with that kind of approach.

All they need now is a "computer" big enough to hold a midget.

You'd have the same problem with Australians. It doesn't go the other
way though. We get too much American Television.
